Description Norham Castle stands high above the river Tweed, it was started in c.1121 by Bishop Ranulph Flambard, but only his earthworks remain after the Scots raised it to the ground. It was rebuilt by Henry 2nd soon after 1157. Most of the present stonework dates from 1422-5 when the castle was strengthened.
