Askeaton Castle was founded around the turn of the 13th century and is situated on an island in the River Deel. Parts of the castle was destroyed in 1652 to make it undefendable.

Askeaton Castle. A Desmond castle standing on a rocky island on the River Deel. Founded by William de Burgo in 1199, it became the dwelling place of the Kings of Munster. Currently undergoing restoration.
